Game Review: Nuclear Blaze

I'm so glad I found this game.

It was created by a Dead Cells developer, and it shows. Apparently it was originally conceived, very quickly, during a game jam

It's a very basic platform game at first glance. You play a firefighter, deployed to investigate and control a fire in an abandoned building.

You have no weapons, just a water hose that auto fills itself when you get close to water ducts.

This is all you have, along with the ability to duck, dodge and roll, and turn taps/switches on and off.

But that's all the game needs.

The different complexity of hazards is introduced slowly, each section is it's own puzzle.

The difficulty balance and progression is very carefully designed, but there are built-in options for changing this to suit your approach if you find it too tricky.

Likewise you can both increase the difficulty, as well as unlock and extra game mode, and there's more than one way you can complete the game, simply getting to the end is just the first.

As a general rule, you douse everything with water, but there's so much more to it. For example, electrical fires have to be isolated and turned off before you can put them out with water, or you risk electrocution.

There are cats along the way that need rescuing (of course there are) and finding all of them is a second challenge, even when you've completed the game.

The game is specifically designed to be played through multiple times, each one with an added hazard or challenge.

And the end is just beautifully surreal.
