"The very best, and most reliable way to root out extremists, in any context, is to be as objective as possible and see who confuses you for an extremist."
They won't be able to distinguish from someone being objective, or holding the middle ground, or sitting on the fence.
Whoever you present a rational, unemotional argument to will confuse you with someone from the other side, and attack you.
Then every accusation becomes a confession.
They are telling you exactly who they are, because it's all that they understand.
This was best summed up in McCarthyism in the US during the 40s and 50s, when anybody not fervently against communism was suspected of being a communist.
