This game is an absolute masterpiece, everything that was good about Doom 2016 (which was itself a masterpiece) both visually and strategically, has been improved, without affecting the game's performance. (I am reviewing the main campaign only)
Everything is bigger and better, with additional complexity only where it's absolutely needed.
What's incredible is that I could have said the same about DOOM VFR, despite it's bugs, and I am silently praying that this episode makes it to VR somehow, because if I miss one thing, it's the bullet time you get while teleporting or using the weapon wheel. Instead you get the Dash, and time dilation while jumping is one of the rune powers you can choose.
The weak points are few and far between, but I want to list them here because they stand out, and the developers might be reading.
1. Pinky. You kept the 2016 pinky, which looks like a Mario Boss, whereas Doom 3's pinky is one of the most terrifying and memorable looking DOOM creatures. The actual creature tactics are a great challenge, I just hate how it looks, it should either have been introduced as a different demon, which would work, or kept it's 2016 fighting style but it's DOOM 3 looks.
2. The all runes cheat code, I was really hoping I could activate more than three runes, instead of just unlocking them all. I badly want all four glory kill runes (quicker, further, longer, and speed boost) with the blood punch health to potentiate them all. If you want any ideas for the additional campaigns....
3. No BFG ammo, when you chainsaw demons? I get why, maybe have it drop from more difficult demons, or just rarely?
4. The platforming, I really think it was close to being a welcome addition, and my feelings thus far are mixed, it was the odd section where it wasn't clear what to do, not that it was difficult per se, which were frustrating for me. It did encourage more active, jumpy play, so on the whole thumbs up, it just happened to be a weak point because it wasn't perfect.
5. The pickup items seem like a relic of an older game now that there's so much resource management based around the different kill methods, it would have been braver to do away with them completely, and added to the aesthetic of the scenery, though I understand why they needed to be kept. How about an option to remove them, with more generous collection to balance things out?
6. Way too difficult on even the second skill setting. I am ashamed to have to play it on the easiest setting.
7. Why does the Arachnotron appear so early? For it then to be introduced cinematically later in the same level? It also contributed to said difficulty level.
8. I do occasionally need the pistol and have to melee.
That's all I think...
I love how the game handles rewards and doesn't use micro-transactional DLC nonsense like so many games out there. I was happy to pay the high price for the season pass, and look forward to the additional campaigns, whilst having fun with the rewards themselves.
