Kinect Air Drums

I decided to plug my Kinect into my PC and see if I could do any kind of hacking.

At this point was mainly doing Flash development, so I wanted to see if I could use that.

Sure enough there was a library - as3kinect and in combination with the openNI drivers, it was possible to publish a flash app and run it with a data connection to the Kinect via a socket server.

It took a few attempts to get it running with the screen recorder, but I eventually managed to snap this short piece of footage.

So here it is, an air drumkit!

It has to said, whilst it's an exciting possibility, you need almost zero latency for good musical applications, and the Kinect running with a socket server connected to the flash runtime, it was about 200-300 milliseconds, which is an eternity if you're creating a responsive drumkit.

Still exciting possibilities lay ahead!
